Culture of Reader’s November Update

Problem: For the 2022-2023 school year my Culture of Readers team is trying to solve the problem of when 5th and 6th graders finish a book they love they don’t know what to read next.

Target Group: Our target group was 5th and 6th graders because both of these grades are at a more advanced level of reader then younger students and this group has about 200 kids. In addition, these grades will give us a more accurate understanding of the books they read because younger kids like 1st and 2nd graders might not read such a wide variety of books like most of the 5th and 6th graders.

Data Collection: To prove this problem exists, me and my group needed to collect data on this matter. We created a survey with questions that revolve around the matter of reading and what books kids read. For example, some questions are “Have you read any of these books from Alan Gratz” or “What type are your favorite types of genres.” Some responses that we saw were that a lot of kids picked a lot of books from popular authors like Alan Gratz, Gordon Korman, and ect. In addition to that, we saw that a lot of kids also read a lot of books from different authors like Katherine Arden, Jason Reynolds which showed us that a lot of books kids read were from famous authors, but there are always a few people who have read a variety of books. In conclusion, this is how we hope to deal with this problem.
